About East Sheen
The area of East Sheen is sometimes called Sheen. The place is located in the suburban area of London. The Upper Richmond Road West is the high street in the area. The Triangle is the central area in East Sheet. A large number of open spaces and parks are also present there which also includes the Richmond Park. The Palewell Common is famous for the play fields, playgrounds, polo field, pitch and putt courts, and tennis courts. Etymologically the place finds meaning in the word ‘shelter’ because the place is supposed to have existed in c. 920 when it was known as Sceon meaning shed or shelter.
Earlier, Richmond was known as Sheen. However, from the thirteenth century East Sheen became separately designated from Sheen. History has it that East Sheen has never formed a separate administrative unit of its own. Instead it was part of Mortlake parish included in Brixton hundred of Surrey. In the year 1840 the place was included in Metropolitan Police District.
From the year 1892 to 1894 the Richmond Municipal Borough took in Mortlake including the East Sheen area. In the year 1894, the North Sheen was formed as one civil parish, after nit got spilt from Mortlake while remaining in Municipal Borough of England.
The railway station that serves the area of East Sheen is the Mortlake Railway Station. Transport facilities are good and a good number of buses serve the area. All these buses primarily ply to Upper Richmond Road West.
