About Streatham

Streatham
Streatham

The district of Streatham, at a distance of five miles from Charing Cross, is located in southern London. The district situated in the northern side is the Streatham Hill while the two districts located in the south are Streatham Vale and Streatham Common. Etymologically, the name, Streatham, stands for “hamlet” on “street”.

The area remained a village and did not undergo developments until the eighteenth century. There were a number of springs in the area that supposedly had healing properties and the place was most likely named after these.

There were huge developments taking place around the Streatham area in London. But this area remained largely unaffected. In the later half of the 19th century only limited development started in the Sunnyhill Road and Wellfield Road. The only large house that remains is Park Hill located on the northern part of Streatham Common. The house for rebuilt for Leaf Family in early part of the 19th century. Later it became the home Sir Henry Tate.

The area witnessed fast development only after the introduction of the Streatham Hill railway station along with the Crystal Palace Railway in the year 1856. In the next fifteen years another two railway stations were built. After the 1st World War ended, Streatham became a zone of entertainment. There came into existence the Streatham Hill Theater along with a number of other cinemas, Locarno Ballroom, and the Ice Rink. The advent of the electric tram service popularized the place as a shopping center soon after.
