Tips to organise your dresser

If you own a lot of clothes and accessories, it is very likely that your dresser is messy and overstuffed. That will eventually make your clothes hard to find and wrinkly. Lucky for you, organising your drawers can be quick and easy and in this article, we will show you exactly how to do that. Organising your dresser will make things so much easier to find and help you know when it is time to do laundry.

The key to doing that easily and efficiently is removing everything from all your drawers and returning the needed items only. Make sure you pay attention to all items you place in there, do you actually need/want them, do they have a better place somewhere else in the house, etc.

Here are some tips on how to properly reorganise your dresser

1. Start with empty drawers – Yes, remove absolutely everything from all your drawers – even the items you want to keep in. It is important to see how many things you have, what you need, and what you are putting in. Reach to the back corner of your drawer, take out everything and go through the pile to sort things out. This will give you a perfect opportunity to dust and wipe the inside of your drawers as well.

2. Declutter your dresser contents – Dresser drawers are a perfect place to store t-shirts, socks, underwear, and other garments and accessories. However, they are also a perfect spot for storing old items you don’t really need or wear. Those simply take up space you can use for better purposes. Once you take everything out of all your dresser drawers, go through all your items and carefully decide what to keep and what not to. The best way to get rid of unnecessary items, make three piles – sell, donate and recycle. Do not keep any clothing that you have not worn in over a year. Do not hold onto clothing that is ill-fitting or you simply don’t really like.

3. Organise the clothing by category – It is important to take into consideration the number of drawers you have, the number of clothes you want to keep and how can you best organise and fit them inside. Make piles of different types of clothing – t-shirts, undergarments, socks, towels, etc. Make sure you only decide to keep clothing that will fit inside your dresser. If your drawers are different sizes, use the biggest one for the biggest category pile, or store two different types of clothes in there.

4. Do not store any bulky items in drawers – Before you put back all the clothes in your dresser, make sure you remove any bulky items like coats, jeans, and thick sweaters. This type of clothing takes up a lot of space when folded in a drawer and is best stored on a hanger in a closet. Consider moving them – that will open up a lot of space for all your thinner, smaller items. If you don’t wear your bulky clothes often, try storing them in a storage box under the bed.

5. Use drawer organisers to store small items – If you have a lot of smaller or easily-tangled objects, it is best to avoid throwing them in the drawer. You can use this for camisoles, stringy garments, and socks. Put them in a drawer organiser where all of them will have a designated spot. That way, whenever you are looking for something, you won’t be going through a giant pile of things but will be able to identify any item in an instant.

6. Don’t use the top of your dresser as a storage space – Even though it is tempting, you should avoid storing items on top of your dresser. Think of it more as a decor spot. Keep it clear and clutter-free. You can store your jewellery or perfume bottles on top (place them in an appealing manner). Cleaning the top of your dresser would be much easier when there are not a bunch of items stored on it. You can use a tray to hold smaller things.

7. Rotate your clothes seasonally – Whenever you open your dresser drawers, you don’t want to be going through a bunch of items you won’t be wearing again any time soon, in order to find the one you went looking for. Store off-season clothing in a different place in your home. You can try the basement, attic, or even under the bed in big storage boxes. Replace the winter/summer items in late spring and mid-autumn but always keep a drawer with some thinner/warmer clothes, just in case.

8. Always wash all clothing – Whenever you are switching from one season to another, wash the clothes you are putting away. That way, you will not only preserve them fresh for longer, but you will also ensure that your dresser is clean, organised, and smelling good. Cleaning your dresser drawers inside and out can be done once a year.
